Music Marketing Blog Post

About a week ago I started a project in which 4 people, including myself, were required to develop a "pitch" for a new band. However, it wasn't a simple "why we're the best next thing" kind of pitch as we were mandated to create visual aspects within our pitch.

One of the main visual aspects was a music video of a song that reflected the band we were going to pitch. Our group was assigned to use a song titled "9th at Pine" by Less than Jake. As we heard the song, my group collectively agreed that we weirdly enough, felt pulled to a beachy aesthetic incorporated within the punk, unruly vibe. For this reason, as we brainstormed the story of our music video, we decided that we wanted to have the story set at the beach at some point. In addition, to incorporate the disobedient vibe, we strived to have some kind of coming-of-age plotline that would further exemplify the idea of rebelliousness. In the end, we decided on a story that starts at the beginning of a mundane teen day but turns into an exciting story as the plot progresses.

As for the actual pitch we were able to find a template that perfectly fits the kind of relaxed rebelliousness that we were doing our best to demonstrate. For example, when people think of punk they think of a dark aesthetic that romanticizes the pessimistic, intrusive thoughts society may have. Inevitably, one may go down a slippery slope and think about skulls... The template we found not only included skulls but also surfboards, floaties, and beachy drinks. This accurate template not only helps our audience get a better sense of our band's image but it also visually captivates them. In a pitch, it is much easier to see something rather than imagine it. This is why we created multiple social media accounts which showcase what our band's media hubs would look like. Furthermore, it strengthens the idea of professionalism. Below are the official accounts and logo we have created for "Freight Patrol".

As for the presentation and its content, my group agreed to keep a straightforward take on the slides. We believe the main focus shouldn't be the slides but rather the presenters themselves. We will prepare by writing notes on each slide and their content and studying that content so we feel confident when we have our chance to present our pitch. Needless to say, presentations are easier to watch when the presenter is engaged and confident in the content they're speaking about. Finally, we settled to leave the music video until the end. We believe that if the audience is convinced with just the slides, this could be the final push that allows them to be on board and if they were not convinced by the slides, the video could serve as a turning point which leaves them wondering.
